Generally, when the inner wall of the pipeline is smooth and the water flow is free to move, if the opened valve is suddenly closed, it will cause the instantaneous impact pressure of the water flow on the valve under the action of inertia, commonly known as the "water hammer phenomenon". This is also the true face of the strange noise at night in the residential area.



When the valve is closed, the pressure generated by the pipeline is too high, which can easily cause the water pipe to burst, which is called "positive water hammer"; on the contrary, the pressure generated when the valve is opened is too low, which will cause the pipeline to collapse, which is called "negative water hammer." The common point is that they will all have a strong destructive effect on the pipeline, and the valves and fixtures themselves will not be spared.




Another form of water hammer is called "steam water hammer", which is still concentrated in residential areas where heating is provided. Steam heating pipes rely on steam to transport heat, while condensate is always present inside the pipes.

The speed of steam is higher than that of condensed water. Once too much-condensed water hinders the flow of steam, the speed of steam will be transferred to the condensed water so that the condensed water will get the shock wave-like impact of a bullet.


Amplify the water hammer phenomenon, like on the pipes of the drainage pump, submersible pump or water pump of a water pumping station. When the pump is turned on to send water from a low position to a high position, if the pump is suddenly shut down due to unexpected factors, the water flow will reverse and generate a shock wave comparable to the speed of sound to propagate in the valve and pipeline. Under such a premise, the accidental loss will be extremely major.



Therefore, most pumping stations will choose a suitable check valve to protect the pump pipeline.
